Analysis Of Election Results – Marlborough
Just some interesting statistics from the November 2009 Marlborough election.
There were approximately 1150 voters who turned out at the polls out of about 4,200 who are registered, which was a 27.4% turnout.
The registered voters in Marlborough are comprised of:
Democrat: 32% (Up from previous years when it used to be about 29%)
Republican 24% (Down from previous years when it used to be about 26%)
Unaffiliated: 44% (Pretty much the same as in the past when it used to be 45%)
However, on Election Day the voters who actually came to the polls were comprised of the following:
Democrat: 36.5%
Republican 35.5%
Unaffiliated: 28%
This means that the Republicans turned out a much higher percentage of their registered voters than the Democrats. The turnout between the Democrats and the Republicans were nearly the same although the Democrats hold about a 6 to 4 majority over the Republicans when it comes to registered voters. In addition, please note that although the Unaffiliated voters comprise about 44% of the electorate, only 28% of the votes cast on Election Day were cast by Unaffiliated voters.
The Republicans got the base out, whereas the Democrats didn’t.
How anyone voted is not known of course and we can’t tell how many Unaffiliated or Democrats voted Republican.
Even if the Democrats and Republicans voted straight tickets the Unaffiliated could have made the day Republican on their own.
This reflects conventional political wisdom, the Democrats have always had an issue getting the vote out, whereas more people identify as Democrat, the depth of commitment is less than individuals who have self identified as Republican.
Republicans always pray for rain or snow on election day.
