Comment on CT Office of Fiscal Analysis Can’t Confirm Gov Malloy Budget Savings by Kantrowitz

I said the same thing here http://blog.ctnews.com/kantrowitz/2011/05/18/malloy-promised-1-billion-in-savings-next-year/ way back on May 18. I said the budget was based on "smoke and mirrors:"

Here are some of the more imaginative savings:

Efficiency:

    Technology Initiatives: ($40,000,000)

Utilize new technologies and reduced licensing procurement and consulting costs

    SEBAC Budget Savings Initiative ($70,000,000)

Implement savings ideas proposed by employees to reduce
costs in agencies through reduced procurement costs, more efficient agency operations and other
    initiatives.:

“Value based health and dental care plan:”

Alleged to produce $102 million in savings in the first year, I wonder where the projected savings come from.

If anything it seems to be that the first year cost for this would be higher than before with all the additional requirements to see a doctors and dentists. I’m not the only one who thinks so. Here’s what an expert consultant says: “A value-based approach to your health plan can result in short-term increases in healthcare expenditures.”

Town calendar lists nothing on the 25th. I think you meant the 15th.

Hi David,

Good to hear from you. I thought this was interesting as a "from the other side" point of view angle.

I know this guy, he is a political operative, he was working for Rob Simmons last I saw him. So I was also, helping him out and giving him some exposure and a wider audience, you know help his google rank.

There is a down side to the constant video cameras, it is getting harder and harder to get honest non-scripted answers out of candidates, when they are being video taped 24/7.

It's just the way it is and it's not going to change.

That is a ridiculous article. If you want to represent people, then the people have a right to confront and question you. I don't see the issue with recording such a confrontation.

Unrelated, I like the new site layout.

At the Board of Finance meeting the other evening they voted to put $37K back in the budget for lifeguards. This is about $10K shy of the requested budget, but it sounds like it would be adequate to fund them. After the meeting I heard that First Selectman Black was none too happy about the actions taken by the BOF.

I saw this issue as being the one topic that could have certainly caused a NO vote on this year's budget. The question now will be whether or not the remaining budget package is supported by the general public. It features a slight decrease on the part of the Board of Education, partly due to a retirement, but will the lack of teacher concessions cause people to continue to question whether we could do even better? Not sure, but that will be up to the taxpayers to decide on in May.

I would encourage EVERYONE to follow the budget process closely and to become educated about what our Town leaders are doing.

Why don't we just get a dog to patrol the beach. Say a Newfoundland (Newfie). They are great water rescue dogs and work for kibble.
